Late Payments
Payment history is one of the most important parts of a credit report, so a single incorrect late payment can matter.
What is actually going on
Payment history carries more weight than any other single factor in most scoring models, which is why one thirty-day mark reported in error can cost more than a much larger balance reported correctly.
Most of the incorrect late marks we see are not disputes about whether someone paid. They are artifacts of a system change: an autopay that silently lapsed, a loan that moved to a new servicer mid-cycle, a forbearance that was agreed to verbally and reported as a delinquency.
A late mark you do not think is right
Late payments may be reported in error after an autopay change, a servicing transfer, a forbearance or deferment arrangement, or a processing mistake.
What we hear most often
- A payment made on time but posted after the due date
- Late marks reported during an agreed forbearance or deferment
- Delinquencies that appear around a servicing transfer
- Autopay that lapsed without notice to you
- A payment grid that does not match your bank records
How it may affect you
Recent late payments may affect your scores and how lenders view new applications, and the more recent the mark, the more weight it tends to carry.
Matching reports to your payment records
What we review
- Bank statements, confirmations, and payment receipts
- Any hardship, forbearance, or deferment agreements
- The month-by-month payment grid on each report
- Dates around any servicing transfer or account change
What legitimate assistance may involve
With your authorization, assisting with disputes where your records show a payment was reported incorrectly, and explaining options such as contacting the creditor directly, which sometimes resolves a single mark faster than a bureau dispute.
Potential benefits if an actual error is resolved
A corrected payment history may better reflect how you actually manage your accounts. A late payment that genuinely happened may legally remain on your reports.
Two ways to start
Both are free, and neither commits you to a service agreement. Most people start with the questionnaire so we can look at the details before we talk.
Send us your situation
Answer a short questionnaire about late payments and anything else on your reports. Our team reviews your answers before any conversation, so the first call is about your actual accounts.
Book a time to talk
Prefer to speak first? Pick a time that works for you and bring your questions. You can always complete the questionnaire afterward.
You have the right to dispute inaccurate information directly with the credit bureaus at no cost. Working with Royal Freedom is optional. We do not guarantee deletions, approvals, debt elimination, score changes, or a specific timeline.
Not sure where late payments leaves you?
