Charge-Offs
A charge-off is an accounting step a creditor takes, but how it is reported afterward can still contain mistakes.
What is actually going on
A charge-off is a bookkeeping decision: after a period of non-payment, the creditor moves the account off its performing books. It does not mean the debt was forgiven, and it does not mean the account stops being reported. What it does mean is that the account often stops being actively maintained, and errors that creep in afterward tend to go uncorrected.
One point worth understanding before you dispute anything: an original account and a related collection can both legitimately appear on your report at the same time, as long as only one shows a balance owed. Their presence together does not by itself establish an error.
Balances and statuses that do not line up
A charged-off account might show an incorrect balance after a sale or settlement, or list inaccurate dates.
What we hear most often
- A balance still reported after the debt was sold to a collector
- A settled account that does not reflect the settlement
- Both the original account and a collection showing a balance owed
- Date-of-last-activity entries that do not match your records
- Status details that were never updated after the account changed hands
How it may affect you
Charge-offs can be significant negative items and may affect approvals for new credit, particularly when the reported balance overstates what is actually outstanding.
Reviewing the full account trail
What we review
- Original account details and any settlement or payment records
- Whether the debt was sold or transferred, and to whom
- Reported balance, status, and dates on each report
- Whether more than one entry shows a balance for the same debt
What legitimate assistance may involve
With your authorization, assisting with disputes over inaccurate details and explaining practical options for accounts that are reported accurately.
Potential benefits if an actual error is resolved
Accurate balances and statuses may reduce the appearance of debt you no longer owe to that creditor.
Two ways to start
Both are free, and neither commits you to a service agreement. Most people start with the questionnaire so we can look at the details before we talk.
Send us your situation
Answer a short questionnaire about charge-offs and anything else on your reports. Our team reviews your answers before any conversation, so the first call is about your actual accounts.
Book a time to talk
Prefer to speak first? Pick a time that works for you and bring your questions. You can always complete the questionnaire afterward.
You have the right to dispute inaccurate information directly with the credit bureaus at no cost. Working with Royal Freedom is optional. We do not guarantee deletions, approvals, debt elimination, score changes, or a specific timeline.
